Classification of the durability of wood

Classification of the durability of wood

When it comes to the resistance of heartwood to wood-destroying fungi for timber components in contact with the ground, there is a classification system which offers our customers a good overview of the service life for selected species of wood and their modified products.

This information is however merely a guide to life expectancy under temperate climatic conditions for the individual classes in relation to each other. It is not possible to provide exact values for any specific service life as this greatly depends on local conditions and the measures taken to protect the wood. This therefore does not constitute any guarantee or warranty on our part.

Color development

Color development

Color development

The high proportion of natural wood imprints the innovative product with its natural characteristic properties. The visible colour variations can be caused by the reaction of lignin.

The product has a bright, shiny colour at the beginning. It should be noted that this is a natural product which is subject to changes in colour due to weathering. The processed piece of wood will darken during the first weeks from a slight yellowish shimmer to an exquisite deeper shade.

The term of the maturation is addicted from the UV radiation and the exposure.

It is important to lay the terrace decking in the direction of brushing (installation arrow); otherwise the orientation of the fibres may cause a different surface effect (lawn mowing effect).

Cleaning and care

Cleaning and care

Cleaning and care

Cleaningnotes for the Artwood® terrace planks

Regularly cleaning minimizes the deposits like pollen, dust and other organic substances.

It’s advisable to clean the terrace planks at least two times in a year. We recommend to clean the terrace planks like that:

  1. Please sweep the dry, loose rubbish from the terrace deck.
  2. Please do water entirely the deck and keep it wet for 15 minutes.
  3. Please clean the terrace deck with a brush or a scrubbing brush. If you need it cleaner  you can use a surface cleaner with a rotating brush.
  4. After the end clean it again with clear tap water.

Please note that the temperature on the outside should be at least 15 degrees centigrade.

Our Artwood® terrace decking is open-pore, and its brushed finish makes it non-slip. The rougher and brighter the finish, the more sensitive is to normal environmental dirt. You can keep your terrace decking looking smart by cleaning it regularly.

Sweep your terrace decking regularly with a hard brush, and clean the entire terrace at least twice a year using tap water and a brush or a scrubber.

Care:

Artwood® terrace decking does not need any additional care beyond normal cleaning when used outdoors in areas without cover. We recommend treating areas of the terrace that are covered or partially covered with a WPC oil.

Potential uses for Artwood® WPC and GCC

Capabilities of Artwood® WPC and GCC

Potential uses for Artwood® WPC and GCC

WPC hollow chamber planks absolutely must be installed at a minimum 2% gradient so that permanent damage does not occur (cupping, dimensional changes or cracking due to frost).

If a gradient of at least 2% is not possible, only GCC decking should be used.

Natural fibre inclusions (phloem)

Natural fiber inclusion

Natural fibre inclusions (phloem)

Artwood® products consist of up to 75% wood fibres. Depending on the raw material, this may lead to low-level inclusions of other natural fibres such as phloem (transition layer between bark and wood). A maximum of 0.03% of the surface may be affected. These will largely disappear through abrasion over time as the terrace is used.

Water stains

Water stains

Due to constant weathering, these rarely occur on a sloped, uncovered deck. They are more likely to form in the transitional area between the open space and the canopy or in the areas under the drip edges. Water stains cannot be completely prevented there and can usually be removed with water and conventional cleaning equipment. Over time, the absorbent nature of the Artwood® terrace decking will be lost, and the stain sensitivity will decrease significantly.
